Jasper Vassie’s process
Jasper Vassie seeks to create simple yet powerful imagery using a cartoony and playful style. The human form is reduced into a single logo, elements are used and reused and forms are continually experimented with across multiple pieces in multiple ways.
Jasper’s work is almost conversational, an idea appears in one piece then appears in another, triplicated, replicated, morphed, transformed, manipulated. This process manufactures artistic artefacts from the train-of-thought creative process capturing the transient permanently.
Jasper works quickly, moving from one idea to another in rapid succession. Jasper will often create multiple pieces in a single sitting then more through the work later, removing what doesn’t work and reimagining those ideas that are powerful and meaningful.
Jasper’s quick style makes use of a wide range of mark-making techniques. The studio is awash in tools implements and mediums so that creativity can be captured and transformed into artwork whenever it appears.
Jasper Vassie does not limit himself to a single format or subject but is perhaps best known for his pen drawings. Jasper is drawn to using not only white paper but coloured paper and card to create an immediate sensory change in the piece. This is a fairly unique approach as many artists limit themselves to using more classic materials in neutral tones.
The work featured on this site is only a fraction of the work available in the archives as Jasper has been creating for more than a decade. If you would like to enquire about seeing more work from this period please get in touch.
Jasper Vassie’s principal focus is on the artificiality of human organisation; the arbitrary nature of existence, structure and normalcy. Using simple materials Jasper is able to draw attention to the nonsensical and darkly whimsical nature of being anything at all.
Jasper has a unique style and personal visual language. His work is eminently recognisable and is constantly evolving and changing. Unlike many artists, Jasper is able to create work quickly and can resultantly capture the tiny moments of reflection that, all too often, pass us by.
Jaspers work is tightly drawn, carefully worked, reworked and revised. The pieces created are often curiously ambiguous as well as being highly deliberate.
